Stoneboat Special Edition: Lakeland College Sesquicentennial

Picture
How is Stoneboat connected to Lakeland College?
Stoneboat has a close relationship with Lakeland College.  We aren't officially affiliated with the college, but we can say that without Lakeland, Stoneboat wouldn't exist.  Writing student Rob Pockat (class of 2011) originally envisioned the journal as a place where his classmates could publish their work, but under the guidance of writing professor Karl Elder it quickly evolved into a much bigger project.  Soon, Lakeland alum Jim Giese '10, Assistant Professor of General Studies Signe Jorgenson, and Alumni Relations Director Lisa Vihos were recruited as associate editors, and the journal was born.  Since October 2010, Stoneboat has published quality prose, poetry, and visual art by both emerging and established writers and artists, many with Lakeland College connections and many without.

What is the Sesquicentennial Edition?
Lakeland College is kicking off its sesquicentennial celebration at graduation in May 2012, and Stoneboat will be a part of that celebration.  Thanks to a Lakeland College Interdisciplinary Research grant, we are able to publish a special edition of Stoneboat featuring work from all members of the Lakeland College family who want to share their Lakeland memories in the form of poetry, short stories, essays, or photography/visual art.  This special edition will be featured at the All-College Reunion in June 2012.

How Can I Participate?
If you are a member of the Lakeland Family (student, alum, current or former staff member, current or former professor/instructor/adjunct instructor, current or former board member, or a friend of the college), we hope you will consider contributing to this special issue of Stoneboat. In your submission, you can tell us about:
  • An "Ah-ha!" moment you had at Lakeland
  • A professor, colleague, or student who inspired you
  • A connection you've made between Lakeland and "the real world"
  • Anything else Lakeland-related
If you would like to contribute either a piece of writing or artwork, please submit your work no later than February 15, 2012.  You may submit work, along with a brief statement explaining your connection to Lakeland College, by e-mailing stoneboat.journal@gmail.com with "LC SQ Issue" in the subject line or by sending a hard copy to:

Due to space limitations, and because we want our print edition to be as varied as possible and represent as many facets of the Lakeland community as possible, not all work will be published in the print version of the sesquicentennial edition.  However, all submissions will be available online, either at the Stoneboat website or on the Lakeland College website.  This is a detail that will be finalized as our deadline approaches.

What if I'm not a Writer or Artist?
We know that not everyone majored in art or writing at Lakeland, but we don't want that to stop anyone from contributing to this project.  Stoneboat's staff will edit all the written work we receive, and we'll ask you to approve any major changes prior to publication.  We can't help much with the visual art, but even if you've got old photographs from your time at Lakeland, we are interested in those.  We don't need the originals -- you can just scan or photocopy the photos and send them our way.

How Can I Get a Copy of the Special Issue?
If you contribute a piece of writing or visual art, you will receive a complimentary copy of Stoneboat's Lakeland College Sesquicentennial Edition.  If you are not a contributor, though, copies will be available for purchase.  Check back this spring for more information.
